CENTRE ACTIVITIES TAKE FLIGHT
Two ICTP activities recently set up shop thousands of miles from Trieste: one in Colombia, the other in Viet Nam. In February, the Centre's Microprocessor Laboratory travelled to Medellin, Colombia, to hold the Second Regional Course on Advanced VLSI Design Techniques. The course, cosponsored by the United Nations University in Tokyo and locally organized by several research institutes and universities in Colombia, introduced scientists and engineers to the latest VLSI design techniques. Such techniques are used in drawing microchip circuits. In March, the Centre journeyed to Hanoi, Viet Nam, to oversee the South-East Asian Regional College on Microprocessor-Based Real-Time Systems in Physics. The College was intended to train physicists and engineers on how to make use of real-time operating systems in the design and implementation of computer controlled experiments. The course and the college were opened solely to researchers from the region in which each was held.
