TRANSFERRING THEORY INTO PRACTICE
Last month, participants in ICTP's School on the Use of Radio for Digital Communications enjoyed a "down-to-earth demonstration" of theories they had recently studied when they witnessed a transfer of data and a videoconference transmitted over a microwave link between the Centre and downtown Trieste. The field demonstration was done in collaboration with ACEGAS, the local water, electricity and gas company. Some 40 students from 23 different developing countries attended the school, which was co-sponsored by the International Union of Radio Science in Gent, Belgium, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva, Switzerland. Sandro M. Radicella, Head of ICTP's Aeronomy and Radiopropagation Laboratory, and Ryszard G. Struzak, a member of the ITU's Radio Regulation Board, served as co-directors.
