DIRECTOR'S AFRICAN JOURNEY
ICTP Director, Miguel Virasoro, recently completed a one-month tour of Africa. Among the countries he visited were Benin, Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and South Africa. Discussions focused on areas of mutual interest and the potential for additional collaboration based on ICTP's already close relationship with many African universities and scientific research institutions. Issues receiving particular attention were (1) implementation of a shared Ph.D. program that would utilize, for example, the contacts and resources developed through the Centre's Diploma Course, and (2) ICTP assistance in helping African nations build a critical mass of scientists, especially in physics and math. The latter could follow, for instance, the successful example of the ICTP's Office of External Activities' LAM Network (African Network on Lasers, Atoms and Molecules).
