SEISMIC ACTIVITIES
The recent strong earthquake that shook a wide region of Mexico had been forecast in a seismic map released last June by a team of Russian scientists who have collaborated with the ICTP for more than a decade. From 4-22 October, ICTP visiting scientist Vladimir Keilis-Borok and his colleagues, with other geophysicists from Austria, France, Israel, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, lectured at the Fifth Workshop on Non-Linear Dynamics and Earthquake Prediction, co-sponsored by the European Commission. Some 50 students, mostly from developing countries, participated in the workshop. During the last week of the month, ICTP hosted a two-day-workshop on the geodynamics of Antarctica, organised by the Experimental Geophysical Observatory (OGS) of Trieste.
