Paul N. Butcher, professor emeritus of physics at the University of Warwick, Coventry, United Kingdom, and one ICTP's most frequent visitors, died in early August. As director of many ICTP workshops and head of the Condensed Matter Group's advisory committee, Butcher came to the Centre some 25 times over the past 15 years. His last visit was in May. Butcher's major field of research was solid state physics, where he focused on such issues as electron transport, thermopower in semiconductors, and theoretical questions pertaining to linear and non-linear electronic and optical processes.
