FROM ECONOPHYSICS TO NEUROSCIENCE
Evolutionary game theory, adaptive learning, and theories seeking to explain financial market behaviour will be the focus of discussions at the School on the Mathematics of Economics to be held from 21 August to 2 September. The School (co-sponsored by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences) represents another step forward in ICTP's efforts to explore potential uses of mathematics and theoretical physics in modelling and understanding economic processes. The first School was held two years ago. Beginning 21 August as well and continuing through to 15 September, ICTP will host the EU (European Union) Advanced Course in Computational Neuroscience. Participants will be introduced to fundamental issues in neural organization, ranging from subcellular mechanisms to the functioning of the entire brain. The intensive four-week Course, supported by the European Commission, Boeringer Ingelheim Foundation, International Brain Research Organization, and Brain Science Foundation (Tokyo), will combine lectures with laboratory exercises--the latter focusing on computer simulations of complex brain functions.
