QUAKE EXCHANGE
Giuliano Panza, head of the Structure and Non-Linear Dynamics of the Earth (SAND) group, which is an ICTP hosted activity, recently led a contingent of Italian researchers to the first-ever Indo-Italian Workshop on Seismic Risk Evaluation held in Hyderabad, India. He was accompanied by Abdelkrim Aoudia, also from ICTP and the University of Trieste; Roberto Sabadini, University of Milan; Fabrizio Mollaioli, University of Rome; Peter Suhadolc and Fabio Romanelli, University of Trieste; Giacomo Di Pasquale, Italian National Seismic Survey, Rome; and Leonello Serva, Italian National Environmental Protection Agency, Rome. Among the topics discussed were seismological observation networks and geo-databases, seismic hazard assessments, and seismic vulnerability. Alternating papers from Indian and Italian researchers provided a unique framework for the workshop. Participants also learned about recovery/rehabilitation efforts following the 1997 Umbria/Marche earthquake in Italy and the emergency response to the devastating earthquake in Gujarat, India, which struck in late January.
