JACOB PALIS HONOURED
ICTP Scientific Council member Jacob Palis, professor of mathematics at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics, Rio de Janeiro, and secretary of the International Mathematical Union, has been elected a foreign associate of the French Academy of Sciences. His primary research focus has been on the mathematical principles that drive hyperbolic dynamic systems, a field that he helped pioneer. Palis is one of the most influential mathematicians in Latin America. He has gained additional stature as one of the most thoughtful advocates for the development of mathematics in the developing world.
