Lung Chi Wei, one of the first Chinese scientists to be associated with ICTP, died on 5 December 2001. In 1982, he was appointed an ICTP Associate and, in 1985, he became a member of the ICTP Solid State Advisory Committee. Lung visited the Centre each year between 1985 and 2001 to help organize ICTP training activities.
