Nobel Laureate Hans Bethe, one of the most prominent theoretical physicists of the past century, died at his home in Ithaca, New York. He was 98. Bethe, who won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1967 “for his contributions to the theory of nuclear reactions, especially his discoveries concerning the energy production in stars", was an ardent supporter of ICTP and close friend of the Centre’s founding director Abdus Salam. He was a guest of honour at ICTP’s Symposium on Contemporary Physics in 1968, celebrating the opening of the Main Building. Bethe’s lecture was published in From a Life of Physics (Vienna: International Atomic Energy Agency, 1969). A video tape of the lecture is also available for viewing in the Library.
