The Italian weekly Panorama (14 April 2005, p. 166-172) has published a feature article on earthquake-prone areas throughout the world. A substantial portion of the article is devoted to the role that Italy can play in training scientists from the South to mitigate the effects of earthquakes citing the efforts of the Structure and Non-Linear Dynamics of the Earth (SAND) group at ICTP. Karim Aoudia, a researcher with the SAND group, also announced that the recent ICTP conference on tsunami physics and preparedness, held on 24 March 2005, will soon be followed by two other conferences in Mauritius and Paris. He also noted that ICTP will play a central role not only in the training of experts but also in the exchange of seismological information by scientists in both the developed and developing worlds.
