ICTP Director in Pakistan

ICTP Director K.R. Sreenivasan met with Pakistan’s President, Pervez Musharaf, and Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, during a week-long trip to attend the 30th International Nathiagali Summer College on Physics and Contemporary Needs, which took place from 27 June to 13 July. The Director also met with the Director General of Pakistan’s newly created National Centre of Physics, Riazuddin; the Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Parvez Butt; former Chairman of PAEC and Special Adviser to the Prime Minister, Ishfaq Ahmad; the Executive Director of Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), Hameed Ahmed Khan, and other scientific heads of institutions, including the newly created Centre for Global Change. He also paid a visit to Quaid-i-Azam University. Pakistani officials, including President Musharaf, expressed admiration for the accomplishments of ICTP and looked forward to even stronger ties between Pakistan’s scientific community and the Centre in the future. Among the specific items discussed were ICTP’s potential role to serve as a bridge between on-going efforts to improve relations between scientific communities in Pakistan and India, especially in the area of global climate change, and the contributions that ICTP could make to the National Centre of Physics, which plans to expand enormously over the next few years following the opening of its new headquarters in 2006. Pakistan has increased its scientific budget nearly 70-fold since 1999, and it was recognized that ICTP could play an important role in serving as a beacon of quality during times of rapid expansion. Director Sreenivasan expresses his immense thanks to the Pakistani scientific community for their hospitality during his stay.
