The Friuli Earthquake 30 Years Later
6 May marks the 30th anniversary of a violent earthquake that struck parts of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. The earthquake killed nearly 1000 people and caused hundreds of million of dollars in property damage. To commemorate the event, Regione Friuli-Venezia Giuliaa is organizing several events from 28 April to 6 May, including a scientific workshop examining a wide range of topics such as the region’s seismology, civil preparedness and reconstruction policies. Giuliano F. Panza, head of ICTP’s SAND (Structure and Non-Linear Dynamics of the Earth Group), will be among the speakers. He will lecture on seismic risk in the region.
