In Memoriam
Dr. Charles S. Brown, Chairman of the Council of Edward Bouchet - Abdus Salam Institute (EBASI), died on 29 September. He was a retired Distinguished Science Fellow at Lucent-Bell Labs, Chair of the physics department at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, USA, and Director of International Affairs of National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP). His main area of scientific interest was theoretical and experimental aspects of polarization optics. In 1988, Brown took part in the First Edward Bouchet International Conference on Physics and Technology, held at ICTP, which gave origin to EBASI. In 1995, he was elected Chairman of the Council of EBASI. In 1996 he was awarded an ICTP Visiting Scholarship to the University of Cape Coast where helped to develop the University’s graduate curriculum. He collaborated with African scientists quite extensively and regarded that part of his work as quite important. Brown visited ICTP in 1989 and 2000 to attend the Council Meeting of EBASI (see "African-American Ties", News from ICTP, No. 95, Winter 2001), and in 2004 to take part in the 40th Anniversary Conference.
