Leonard K. Shayo, a prominent mathematics professor at the University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania, died in Arusha at the beginning of December. He was 59. Shayo began his association with ICTP in the early 1980s. After a few brief visits, he returned for a long research period between 1984 and 1987. He then went back to the University of Dar-es-Salaam, returning to ICTP often in the following decade. Shayo attended ICTP activities mainly related to Science and Development, served on the committee of Regional Representatives for the ICTP Office of External Activities (OEA), and became a member of the African Council of the Edward Bouchet Abdus Salam Institute (EBASI). In this capacity, he last visited ICTP in 2000.
